The Must Knows Before You Go Thrifting

Thrifting for me started way back with my big sister, Esi. She got into thrifting because it was more affordable way for her to get “new” clothes while going to college. I always used to think it was so fun and I often remember hearing my sister being so happy about the deal she got for a unique piece of clothing.

Thrifting is all about finding secondhand clothes or items for great prices in stores and markets. You save money thrifting, find unique pieces, and help save the planet. If you want to see some of my awesome thrift store finds a good bit is here!

The reality of the main stream fashion industry is concerning to say the least. “An estimated USD 500 billion value is lost every year due to clothing being barely worn and rarely recycled. If nothing changes, by 2050 the fashion industry will use up a quarter of the world’s carbon budget.”

The weight of the fashion industry is for no one shoulder to carry alone and requires systematic changes but it also needs people like you to buy clothes already made. By thrifting you become one part of the solution.

However before you start thrifting, these are the things you must know.

Know Yourself First

Before you even step foot into a thrift store, you first got to know yourself. Why you may ask? Because it will 100% influence your thrifting experience.

Questions to first ask yourself:

  1. What are my favorite colors?
  2. What colors or patterns do I already have in my closet?
  3. What do I want to add more of in my closet?

These questions will help you avoid buying the same clothes again in slightly different variations and get you closer to a wardrobe you are excited about!

What to Expect

The Thrifting World is truly magical and the real life version of a treasure hunt. Although as awesome it can be overwhelming at times if you are at newbie status.

Here’s what you can expect in most thrift stores

  • Clothes are organized by size or color but hardly ever both
  • Clothes are separated by men and women
  • Usually there’s 2 to 4 dressing rooms but unfortunately sometimes they are none

When you know what to expect you are better prepared to have a killer thrifting experience!

Every time you thrift, you are a part of the solution.
