Key Tips to Match Money Moves to Values

Have you ever slipped into the black hole of falling in love with money? You got so caught in the pursuit and you later noticed it took way too much of your time, energy, or focus?

Thankfully it hasn’t happened to me but I’ve lived long enough to know how easy it can be to slip and fall in love with money. I know for me one way to avoid the flip, is to know the purpose or job of things in your life. The same goes for money.

Ask yourself: What is the job of my money?

This concept also goes to living a low waste and minimalist lifestyle. It’s taken years to get to this point and I’m still learning but I now have a better sense of how to direct my money the places I want it to go, aka knowing the job of your money.

I have created a short cheat sheet that will help you navigate this crucial question and get you in a place to start your first few steps.

Cheat sheet: What is the job for your money?

Recommendations:

  1. Follow more social media accounts of what you care about ( ex: Follow Hispanic sustainable jewelry businesses on social media);
  2. Create an accountability group to help you spend to your values (ex: Friends that will recommend thrifting instead of fast fashion shopping at the mall);
  3. Start tracking your spending habits (ex: Download a budget app that’s easily accessible when you’re out and about spending money)

I created this cheat sheet to help you better navigate how you spend your money on your low waste and minimalist journey. There are so many things under the sun pulling for your attention or money. It quickly can become challenging to remember the role of your money.

But once you determine your values it gets easier and easier.

For example, if a value for you is supporting BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) sustainable businesses then a job for your money will be to buy from BIPOC sustainable businesses. You can start here with a list over 150 businesses.

Remember not to beat yourself up on the mistakes that are sure to come. The biggest thing is that you never stop telling your money what its job is.
