Before minimalism, I was that person that used to hold on to everything! A craft from elementary school. A t-shirt from my sports team from high school. I loved keeping it all to hold on to the memories. Minimalism changed things for me.
REALIZATION
It took years for me to realize that there are different ways to celebrate a memory. It’s not always required for me to keep something to remember a moment. I realized I could celebrate a memory in different ways. I could take pictures, write about the moment, have a song that captures the memory, or just take it in when it it’s happening.
PRESENT MOMENT TECHNIQUE
It is normal for me now to stop periodically through a day and just soak it in. I pause to listen to the sounds around me, taken in the visuals with beautiful colors, and how I am currently feeling in that environment. This technique helps me stay connected to the present and block out stress. Highly recommend you give it a try!
BETTER ALTERNATIVE
It is refreshing to not have to keep up with all the items I’ve collected over the years. I don’t keep on to things for too long if it’s not necessary. My circumstances got even better when I understood I could give my items to a new home and give my things a “new life”. I always knew I could donate my things but in the last few years I have taken advantage of being able to sell my things online. I used those same items to make me money and use it to invest in new things.
MINIMALISM + MONEY
In 2019, my husband and I made over $500 selling items from our home moving back to Florida. We decide we rather start fresh in Florida and we didn’t want to drive a UHaul across the country with our things. It was the best thing we could have done for us in terms of simplifying our move by a 1000%. It’s a different way of thinking about the benefits of minimalism but it’s one that can make a big difference for a lot of people.
